In today’s musical world, you always manage to find new, exciting bands to listen, and Die Antwoord is definitely one of the most exciting newcomers on the rap scene. Simply put, this is a band that seamlessly combines the alternative hip hop and rave genre in what can be seen as one of the most interesting combinations of the past few years.
Die Antwoord is comprised out of rappers Yolandi Visser and Ninja, as well as DJ Hi-Tek. What makes this band so interesting is the fact that they released their first album, named $o$ online, and because of that they manage to gain the attention of numerous record companies.
The band signed with Interscope Records for a little while, however they ended up creating their own label back in 2011, which is named Zef Records. It was through Zef Records that they released their other studio albums, named Ten$ion and Donker Mag.
Band background
Die Antwoord’s main vocalist, named Ninja, is widely known in the South African scene as being a very popular hip hop artist. It was because of him that the band became very popular in the first place, but the loyalty of Die Antwoord fans even impresses the band members. In fact, this band is one of the few that actually have their own cult following, with fans creating fan arts, and in many situations they have incorporated this art into promotional posters and other stuff.
It’s important to note that Die Antwoord blends the visual as well as the musical style that pertains to the zef culture, which combines numerous discarded cultural elements. Their music might seem a little outdated at first, due to the zef influences, but the reality is that the Die Antwoord music is fresh and easy to relate to at all times.
Their Evil Boy music video, the first they created after posting the original album online became a major hit, and at the time of this writing it has more than 18 million views on YouTube alone.
Die Antwoord broke the deal they had with Interscope because the label wanted them to go more mainstream in order to sell better, but the band declined, hence the need to create their own label. The two new albums have been received with critical acclaim and, recently, during an interview in Paris, the band has announced that a new albums is in the works.
Named Rats Rule, the band is set to bring in music production from DJ Muggs, but at the same time it seems that the band will bring in some new styles as well, while retaining the race and hip hop we all know and love. For hip hop lovers and rave enthusiasts, Die Antwoord is a very good option, because their music has great lyrics, it’s very easy to relate to and just a ton of fun. We recommend you to check out a few YouTube videos of them and, if you like them, grab a few of their albums, their music is really good and well worth a shot.
