Our Growing Love of Cosplay

Fans of Anime and Fantasy are taking it up a Notch, Dressing as their Favorite Characters

Cosplay is more popular than ever, and as the number of people who participate continues to grow, the word is seeping into pop culture circles very quick. To start, the word cosplay is a hybrid from the words “costume” and “role-play”. The explosion of Comic –Con related events travelling through big cities has also spawned a completely new community of cosplayers. Typically, the people that participate go to great lengths to look exactly like their favorite comic book, sci-fi, anime, and video game characters at events like comic-cons. After a little digging, the origins of the word came from a Studio Hard executive from Japan, while attending the 1984 World Science Fiction Convention.

There is more than one-way cosplayers obtain their costumes. There are retailers in Japan that sell amazing life like costumes for a hefty price. There is also individuals that commission out their services to make a one of a kind custom outfit fitted to you personally. This can be pricey also. A third option is to create your own costume referencing images of the character throughout the process. Most cosplayers create their own costumes, with an astounding amount of time put into each phase. They study and research textiles, make up, fashion design, and face paint. Individuals take on their fictional characters mannerisms and body language, and are infamous for not breaking character.

There are different subsets of cosplay; one of the more popular is the subset culture of sex appeal. Some Japanese anime can be very sexual in nature with young looking females wearing revealing clothes. A well-known character is the anime cutie pie, Sailor Moon. With her blond pigtails and revealing clothing, she is one of the more popular characters out there.

The most popular way of presenting cosplay is at fan conventions. There are multiple conventions dedicated to anime and manga, comics, sci-fi, video games, and fantasy. There are also cosplay conventions. The biggest ones are in countries located on the Asia-Pacific rim, where cosplay is way more part of the culture. Back on our home turf, the highest attended conventions are the San Diego Comic-Con and the anime specific Anime North held yearly in Toronto. Cosplay participants welcome having their picture taken, as attending these events gave them a platform to model these amazing replicas. A set of rules were adapted to minimize awkward situations. As long as you politely ask to photograph them and do not press them for personal information, participants will tell you that’s why they are participating, to be photographed and model.

So why has cosplay grown so much in the last few years? The consensus say it is born out of peoples need to escape the daily routine of a nonstop technology driven, global society we live in. It is a form of escapism for people into fantasy and role-playing. Just as watching as sporting event is a form of escapism to those individuals. I am personally in awe of how creative and detailed a cosplayer looks in real life. I am all for freedom of expression and cosplay is an art form itself.
